Passenger lines will be controlled by a government owned monopoly. Passenger rail is not considered as an essential resource, and prices will vary based on availability, and number of days before the trip. Passenger trains will follow the same rules with regards to railway crossings, and will always take priority over freight trains when sharing the tracks. With that in mind, it might make sense for freight trains to travel at night when the passenger fleet is less likely running. It will assume that traveling from one end of the nation to the other end will take 8 hours on non-high speed trains. With that said, most train trips will be in the day time.
With that in mind, there will be no need for sleeper cars, but there will be a need for diner cars. The diner car will be located in the center of the train set. This will reduce the number of cars that a person will have to cross to get to the car. All passenger locomotives will be electric only. This will reduce the demand on the greenhouse gas, and reduce the cost of fueling the trains.
